Am I Pretending to be Asleep?

By Peter Paul, CSC –

Readings: Is 2:1-15; Rom 13:11-14; Mt 24: 37-44

The liturgy of the word invites us to stay awake and wake up from the slumber of sins. It commands us to wake up from the sinful living. There are two ways a person could wake up. First s/he can by her/his own choice/ability wake herself/himself up. Secondly if a person cannot wake up by herself/himself, s/he needs somebody’s help.

In emergency, some people pour water on their friends in order to wake them up. Jesus invites me to wake up from the sinful living by myself. When I feel that I cannot come out from the sinful attitude, he tells me to take the help of others because it may be hard for me deal with sin in order to heal myself. He also invites me to bring people out from the sinful state.

It is easy to wake a person up who is really sleeping. But it is rather difficult to wake a person up who is pretending to sleep. This Advent season, I am going to reflect and pose these questions. Am I pretending to sleep? Do I wake up when some try their best, pulling me out from the sinful state or do I remain in the same place because it gives me comfort and pleasure?
