Without His Help We Can’t do Any Good Work

Readings: Is 45: 6-8,21-25; Lk 7: 18-23

As we are nearing the birth of the Messiah, the readings give us a joyful and hopeful future. Through the gospel reading, we come to know that the disciples of John the Baptist and even John himself are eagerly waiting for the coming of the Christ. It is true that they had a doubt in their hearts whether he was the Messiah or not.

However, clarification of that doubt only led them to the true Messiah. The answer Jesus gave to the disciples of John was not direct but was through actions (“Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.”) Yes, Jesus declared himself with proof that he was the true Messiah.

Most of the time, we declare ourselves as followers of Christ only with words and not with actions, because when it comes to that part of action, it disturbs our comfortable life. Taking steps towards doing something demands courage and sacrifices and facing challenges and difficulties. Only when we are ready to face these challenges willingly, we are his true followers. Today Jesus gives us the perfect example that through good actions we can become his true follower. So, let us ask Jesus to bless us with the spirit of obedience for his will in all things we do, for we cannot do any good work on our own without his help and support.
