When He Knocks, Open Your Heart and Embrace Him

Today’s gospel reading shows us that Jesus has the power over everything and everyone, even on the demons. This power is recognized by the demons themselves for they called him, ‘O Son of God’. But unfortunately, the people of Gadara seem to have failed to acknowledge the true power that Jesus holds. For they considered their swine more precious than the liberation that is given to the men who were possessed by the evil spirits.

Today’s readings tell us that, if we have a materialistic outlook or fail to see things with spiritual eyes, we fail to recognize the good things that we receive. Instead of being happy with the blessings we have received we complain about the little struggles and difficulties that we go through. As a result, we may keep Jesus away from our lives.

If demons can recognize Jesus as Son of God, what about us who are already the children of God? We are created in the image and likeness of God; therefore, it should be easy for us to recognize the power of God in our day today activities. Demons knew that Jesus was there to torment them but for us he brings liberation, he gives us new life. He gives meaning and purpose for our lives. To gain this liberation and life eternal, we need to accept Jesus into our lives.

Therefore, let us not push Jesus away because of our option for worldly materials. Instead, let us open the door of our hearts when he knocks to embrace him, even though it means for us to sacrifice our worldly comforts.
