We Are Called to be Radical Disciples

Readings: 2 Tim 1: 1-8; Lk 10: 1-9

Today we celebrate the memory of Timothy and Titus, who were the disciples of St. Paul. They helped St. Paul in spreading the message of Christ to the people of Corinth. Today’s first reading reminds us that God gave us the spirit of truth and not the spirit of timidity. So, it urges us to witness God without fear or shame.

In the gospel reading, we see Jesus sending seventy-two disciples two by two for his mission. Jesus instructs them not to carry money and sandals, but always share the peace of God to all people they meet.

Through the readings we are invited to be strengthened in faith to do the mission of Christ. Jesus ordered disciples not to carry anything for mission so that the disciples depend on him.

Likewise, in following Jesus, we are called not to accumulate material things of the world, instead be emptied so that it helps us to depend on God, like Jesus depended on his Father. Jesus lived a radical life on the earth to fulfill the will of his Father. He instructed his disciples to live a radical life too by spreading the good news to the people entrusted to them.

Likewise, we are all called to be radical disciples to Jesus. A radical disciple means to forgo everything for the sake of God and spread the peace of Christ among all the people we serve.
