Rejoice With Gladness

By Vimal Kumar A, CSC –

Readings: Zeph 3:14-18a; Lk 1:39-45

The readings of today extend an invitation to look into two aspects: the role of women and bearing of Christ’s message. The visitation of Mary to Elizabeth portrays the significant role of women in the family and in the society. God has shown these great mothers as the epitome of generosity, love and sacrifice. The role that they have played in the salvation history in raising both Jesus and John with good nurture and care signifies the most valuable role of mother and siblings in my life. It is great realization for me, to show my reverence, respect, esteem and treat every woman with equality.

Secondly, as the bearer of Christ’s message: love, joy and peace are the Christ’s messages which Mary, Elizabeth and John experienced as they encountered the presence of Jesus. Mary brought joy and copious blessings to Elizabeth. Obviously it is my duty to bring God to the people and experience his presence to share the same happiness and joy. These two holy women in the Bible spot the first Eucharistic moments in sensing Lord’s presence both in their hearts and wombs joyfully.

Am I prudent enough to acknowledge the presence of the Lord in the Eucharist with joy and reverence? Mary extended her selfless service to Elizabeth and she has set an exemplary role for me as the bearer of Christ’s message to render my selfless service and show my generosity to the needy and marginalized. As the First reading says, ‘the Lord thy God in the midst of you is mighty and he will rejoice over you with gladness.’ Let the season of advent, enable me to make adequate preparation in receiving the Lord Jesus into my heart with gladness and joy by bearing his messages of love, joy and peace to everyone through my words and deeds.
