Prayer Helps Us Sail Through

Readings: 1Kgs 19:9,11-13; Rom 9:1-5; Mt 14:22-33

The readings invite us to have a clear purpose that is followed by committed actions to witness Christ. In the gospel, we see the absence of Jesus in the disciples’ journey. As the disciples went on without Jesus, they faced the strong wind which gradually led them
to a state of despair.

The hopeless situation makes everything look scary. They even thought that Jesus was a ghost. As a sign, Jesus called out to Peter to walk on the water. However, Peter noticed the terrifying wind that made him frightened, and began to sink. Like Peter, many times, I wish to enthusiastically start activities like pray rosary every day, practice typing, and read at least two pages of a spiritual book every day.

Over time, inconsistency in following the little things gets the better of me. I begin to look at small corrections or comments from others on my work as my failure. I make an immediate conclusion that there is no way of getting out of this tossing storm of emotions and situations.

Today, Jesus’ words, ‘Take Heart’ give me courage to look back and reconcile with the commitments that I have long forgotten. His invitation ‘Come’ is to follow up with all my limitations and expose my vulnerability for the sake of God’s mission in the hope that Jesus will make me a whole person with his grace. Jesus makes my faith stronger in the tough situations of life, with a prayer that I may sail through the difficulties as a winner.
