Pray That We May Grow in Holiness

Readings: Lev 19: 1-2, 11-18; Mt 25: 31-46

Today’s liturgy of the word places before us an invitation to reflect on holiness. The reading from the book of Leviticus emphasizes on the practice of holiness by following God’s commandments. All the chosen people are expected to live a holy life. This requires obedience to God’s law of love.

The gospel reminds us that the law of love must be practiced in deeds of charity. While living here on earth we need to live a virtuous life and do our best to continue the mission of the Lord. Sharing in the mission of the Lord we try to be good and loving brothers and sisters to our fellow people. We need to help everyone around us, especially the poor and suffering, because Jesus has said that if we minister to people, we minister to him personally.

Those who long to live a life of holiness, following the example of Jesus open their eyes to see those desperately in need: the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, the prisoner and all those who suffer. According to Pope Francis holiness is reproducing some aspects of Jesus earthly life: his closeness to the outcasts, his poverty, and his sacrificial love. Let us pray that we may grow in holiness by seeing and acting in mercy.
