We have been hearing and witnessing how the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated hunger and poverty in the world. The continuous lockdown has impaired access to livelihoods leading to tragedies of hunger and malnutrition.

People have been undergoing torment and suffering every day. They are looking for instant solutions for their problems. In today’s gospel, Jesus feeds a whopping five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fish. This miracle is a manifestation of God’s compassion for his people, and it is a sign that only God can make the impossible things possible when we turn to him with our humble supplications.

This act of Jesus’ kindness and compassion is not only for satiating the hunger but also for providing comfort to the people. As Christians, it is our duty to understand the pain and needs of people around us. As Jesus went out to heal the people and satiate their hunger, we need to extend our hands with compassion for the people who are suffering in this pandemic.

Our compassion must trump our personal needs and lead us to serve the needy in society.
