Measure of Our Faith

Readings: Gen 19: 15 -29; Mt 8: 23 – 27

The faith that we profess and live by is entirely different at the face of odd situation and crisis moments in life. It is said rightly that in the moment of predicaments we express what we are and understand who God is.

The first reading portrays the faithfulness of God to his promises. The provident act of God only requires ‘faith’ as medium to sustain life in fullness.

The Gospel today reflects the feeble condition of the human before the mighty act of Jesus. At the command of Jesus what is said to be terrifying becomes calm. So, what is demanded of us is to invite Jesus to command all that is scary in our life.

The liturgy today is challenging us to transcend fear and live by faith. The measure of ‘faith’ mentioned in the scripture (why are you afraid, you of little faith?) signifies the distance in our relationship with Jesus.

All martyrs’ death would vouch for ‘faith’ which is the expression of their deep relationship with Jesus. The difference between the weak and strong is the defining line of faith that transcends fear, anxiety and uncertainty. We are strong not because of my health, wealth and fame but by the strength of my relationship with Jesus which is the ‘faith’.
