Readings: Isa 9: 2-7; Lk 1: 26-38

Today we celebrate the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the first reading, we hear Prophet Isaiah speaks about the deep darkness in which the people of Israel were living. This darkness was the darkness of anguish and spiritual death.

Prophet Isaiah consoles the people of Israel by saying that there will be a time of great light shining upon them. Because of this light, the people of Israel will experience peace, blessing, and complete joy in their life. In today’s gospel reading the prophecy of Isaiah is seen fulfilled. The angel Gabriel announced that Mary would conceive and bear a son, son of God Most High, the One who would inherit David’s throne. Trusting in God’s promises she said yes to put her life at the service of God’s plan of redemption.

From that moment onwards Mary joined inseparably to her son, whose kingdom was not of this world. Mary’s queenship is related to the kingship of Jesus. Through her virtuous life she followed her son, King of love, faithfully. She reigns with her son in heaven inspiring all of us to say ‘yes’ to God’s plan for our lives, just as she did, long ago. Her beautiful queenship protects us from all the destructive forces. May her light of truth and love shine on us brightly and enable us o experience peace and joy.
