Listening Can be an Act of Love

By Antony Jayaraj, CSC –

Readings: Jon 3:1-10; Lk 10: 38-42

The contemporary people are in a situation where the technology demands a kind of communication which is competitive. The young and old; the rich and poor are able to use the media (modern gadgets) to communicate with one another where actual, verbal and emotional expressions have been replaced with symbols like emojis in electronic messages. Although the effects of it are questionable, the usability and availability of the expressions is encouraged and welcomed today for its novelty. However, the aspect of reflection and transformation are at cross-roads.

In the first reading, Jonah’s prophetic voice changed the attitude and lifestyle of all living beings in Nineveh. The transformative action of the people of Nineveh displayed the quality of their participation. By choosing to listen to God’s invitation they find change in their lives.

Similarly in the Gospel, Jesus appreciates and encourages Mary’s act. For, she was listening to Jesus giving him the first preference amidst the demands of the day. In choosing to listen to Jonah, the people of Nineveh found favour with the Lord. In choosing to listen to Jesus, Mary was honoured by him. Listening can be an act of love extending due respect to the other where silence speaks louder. Can ‘listening’ be the mode of communication today?
