Mudigere — Joy and expectancy are gathering like a chorus in the lanes and homes around St. Anthony’s Church, Mudigere (a town in Chikmagalur district in the Indian state of Karnataka), as the parish prepares to witness a rare and cherished moment: the ordination of Deacon Joyal Vegas to the Sacred Priesthood on 19 May 2026 at 9:30 a.m. His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Thomasappa Anthony Swamy will confer the sacrament, turning a longtime dream of the faithful into a historic reality for this hill-town community.
For Mudigere, the event is more than a single ceremony; it is a sign of spiritual fruitfulness and communal pride. Although the parish has seen priests from its soil in religious orders, Deacon Joyal will be the first to be ordained for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chikmagalur from St. Anthony’s itself. With only one candidate ordained this year, Bishop Swamy agreed to host the rites at the parish rather than the diocesan cathedral — a decision that has made the moment especially intimate and meaningful for local Catholics.
A son of the parish, Joyal’s journey is both humble and unmistakably attentive to God’s call. Born on 21 May 1997 to John Vegas and Leena Furtado, he grew up in a devout family alongside his sister Josna and brother Joyson. His early years were spent in local schools — Government Higher Primary School, Muttigepura; St. Martha’s High School, Mudigere; St. Joseph’s PU College; and later St. Joseph’s First Grade College in Hassan — before he took the decisive step into seminary life.
Answering the vocation that stirred in his heart, he entered St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary and then completed priestly formation at St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary: three years of Philosophy followed by four years of Theology. These years of study and prayer were coupled with pastoral placements that shaped his pastoral sensibility. During regency he served at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Dasapura, under Very Rev. Fr. Shanthraj R.; later his diaconate ministry took him to St. Alphonsus Church, Alphonse Nagara, and St. Mary’s Church, Marianagara, guided by Rev. Fr. Michael Marie J. and Rev. Fr. R. Rajendra respectively.
Those who know Deacon Joyal speak of a young man whose faith is expressed in simple service and creative devotion. He enjoys music, sings, plays instruments, writes articles and devotional lyrics, and composes hymns — gifts he hopes to bring into parish life. His priestly motto — to create a space where everyone feels spiritually supported, included and valued — signals a pastoral approach rooted in accompaniment, welcome, and care. His stated mission is pastoral: to support people in moments of joy, struggle, and loss, and to foster unity, peace and moral responsibility in the community.
Joyal’s reflections on vocation reveal how prayer and experience braided together to form his sense of calling. “Through prayer and life experiences, I realized I was being called by God to know Him, to love Him and to serve Him,” he says. He speaks candidly about times of weakness and doubt, and how the conviction of God’s sustaining grace — expressed in scriptural touchstones such as Philippians 4:13 and Exodus 33:14 — carried him forward. “Becoming a priest is my way of saying: ‘Lord, You have given me everything… now I give myself completely to You,’” he affirms. His testimony, rooted in gratitude and trust, resonates with parishioners who have watched his steady growth.
The Diocese of Chikmagalur, established on 16 November 1963, spans 14,015 sq. km., serving a population of over 3.1 million people, of whom about 40,123 are Catholics. It is organised into three deaneries — Balehonnur, Chikmagalur, and Hassan — and presently comprises 47 parishes, 37 substations, two mission stations and two shrines. With 71 priests serving across the diocese, Deacon Joyal’s ordination will bring the number to 72, sustaining the Church’s pastoral outreach and its commitment to journeying together “in the spirit of synodality,” as diocesan leaders often say.
For Mudigere parish, this ordination will be only the second celebrated within its precincts. The community remembers earlier vocations with affection, including the late Fr. J. B. Prabhu, S.J., and Rev. Fr. Prashant Fernandes, O.F.M. Now, as preparations unfold under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Sunil Rodrigues and the parish team, the faithful are busy readying the church and streets, rehearsing hymns, and organising hospitality — small outward signs of a hope that runs deep.
Leaders stress that beyond ceremony, the ordination is a call for prayerful support. Parishioners and the wider diocesan family are encouraged to keep Deacon Joyal in their prayers as he prepares to pledge his life to sacramental service, preaching, and pastoral care. For many in Mudigere, his coming is not only a personal milestone but a communal blessing: a witness that God’s call can rise from ordinary homes and classrooms, shaping lives that answer with generosity.
As the parish counts down to 19 May, there is a shared sense that this moment will echo far beyond a single day. It will remain part of St. Anthony’s story — a reminder that faith, nurtured in family and parish life, can bear fruit in service to God and neighbour. Mudigere prepares not simply to celebrate an ordination, but to welcome a shepherd whose vocation was born from grace, sustained by presence, and now steps forward to serve.
