Readings: 1 Jn 5: 5-13; Mk 1: 7-11

Today, in the first reading John tells us that water, blood, and the Spirit, who is truth, bear witness to the humanity, mission, and divinity of Jesus. The Gospel recounts the pivotal moment of Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist, marked by the descent of the Spirit leading him into the desert and ultimately launching his ministry, along with the confirmation of his Sonship by the Father. This divine incident challenges our conventional understanding of greatness. Despite being sinless and perfect, the Son of God participates in a rite intended for repentance.

Jesus, though fully aware of his divinity, chooses obedience to his Father’s plan and aligns himself with John’s mission of preparing the way. He teaches us that true greatness lies not in claiming power but in surrendering to a higher purpose and serving God’s will.

The descent of the Spirit and the voice from heaven further remind us that following the Father’s will is no easy task. Our journey will encounter numerous challenging and disturbing situations, yet we are not alone. God’s affirmation accompanies us, and his unwavering love propels us forward in our mission.
