Today’s first reading from the book of Wisdom depicts the story of King Solomon’s wise choice of choosing Spirit of Wisdom from the Lord. Gradually, wisdom brought wealth, fame, and name unto him.

In the gospel, we have the prominent incident of a rich young man and Jesus, who followed every bit of law and had the desire to follow Jesus. Yet, it was not enough to be a disciple because ‘he had great possessions.’ Probably, this young man was the only one who met Jesus and went away sorrowful. The discipleship is not a wish alone, but a strong conviction to forego all that hinders, especially worldly things. These readings focus on the single message that is ‘to have spiritual wisdom as wealth’.

The world gives the impression that having a bungalow, vehicles, and latest gadgets are wealth. This materialistic wisdom could lead us to be greedy and dissatisfied with the work we do. The
wisdom of God enables us to seek him first, then all things will be added in our life. We need to consider Jesus’ commandments, gifts, and fruits of the Holy Spirit as precious endowments in our
lives through which we understand and experience God in our daily life.

Towards the end of the gospel, Jesus promises us that all we have left for the sake of God would be given in hundredfold. The hundredfold could be found in God himself, because he is everything; through our deeds, we all would be found worthy before him.
