“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” These words of Jesus have inspired thousands of people and made them great, they so wonderfully fulfilled Jesus’ call to deny oneself and follow him. They let Jesus have his way completely and experienced victory and glory.

A perfect example of practicing this truth is St. Therese of Kolkata, a saint from our own country. She was a true disciple of Jesus; she cared for many who were rejected by society. From where she got the strength and desire to deny herself and carry this sort of cross? The zeal and energy for following the Lord came through the prayers and the time spent before the Blessed Sacrament.

Yes, this way of following Jesus is not easy, but not impossible. Jesus is the one who invites us to take up our crosses, he will help us to carry them too, provided we constantly abide in him and his love through our prayers and commitment. Living the Gospel values in our day-to-day life is demanding, difficulties and worldly interests may challenge us. However, when going gets tuff Jesus’ grace is available to us to overcome the trials and be victorious.
