Follow Jesus Even in Times of Pain, Suffering, and Failure

Readings: Is 49: 1 – 6; Jn 13: 21 – 33, 36 – 38

In the first reading, we hear the prophet Isaiah identifying himself as a privileged servant of God and a chosen beacon to illuminate the gentiles. As God selected Isaiah to spread light among the nations, he has chosen us to be lights in the societies where we live.

God has a plan and purpose for everything he does, including for us. He wants us to internalize the message conveyed in the reading and to bring forth light for those living in darkness today. In the Gospel, we witness the scene of the Last Supper where Jesus announces the journey of his predetermined destiny and the revelation of Judas’ betrayal. We also encounter Peter’s declaration, “I will lay down my life for you,” and Jesus’ foretelling of Peter’s denial thrice before the rooster crows. In our own lives, we embody characteristics of both Judas and Peter.

There are times we betray our faith and beliefs. There are times we fail in living our vows and commitments. Today, we must keenly ask ourselves whether we align more with Judas’ character or Peter’s. While the consequences of their actions in the Kingdom are the same, Peter repents while Judas does not. Today, Jesus invites us to follow him intimately even in times of pain, suffering, and failure, as Peter did, for the glory of God.
