Do Not Judge Others Based on Our Prejudices

Readings: Heb 9:15, 24-28; Mk 3:22-30

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus is responding to the scribes who accused him of being possessed by Beelzebul. Jesus asks them ‘How can Satan cast out Satan?’ This reading is relevant when we apply it to our daily life.

It is a fact that there is no community that can run smoothly if the members are divided among themselves. The Gospel passage reminds us that, it is only goodness that can overcome evil and only light can remove darkness. Jesus understands their mind when they tried to take advantage of his power and spoil his name. Many accusations had been levelled against Jesus, that he is from a remote village Nazareth, misleading people, he is a blasphemer, a sinner, and has an evil spirit through which he drives out demons.

Many times, we too fail to recognize the hand of God in various events of our lives like the Pharisees by giving many reasons to defend ourselves. Jesus Christ knows the innermost thoughts of our minds and knows the deepest desires of our hearts. Therefore, he reminds us that there is no greater blindness than blindness to the truth. If we want to perceive and
experience Jesus correctly and clearly, we should come out of pride, passion, and prejudices which dominate our lives.

Everything will not come automatically and immediately; it is a lifelong process that we have to live and practice every day. We should understand that we are responsible for ourselves. The moment we have pride, prejudice, and passion in our attitude we sin against the Holy Spirit which will not be forgiven. Let us pray that we may not judge others based on our pride, prejudices, and passion.
