Catholic Bishops of India Concerned over Polarisation Along Religious Lines

Verghese V Joseph –

Bengaluru: In response to the intricate socio-political landscape and the looming impacts of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the 170 bishops of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) have issued a compelling final statement expressing deep apprehensions over the array of socio-political challenges grappling the nation.

The bishops convened earlier this year at St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences in Bengaluru from January 31 to February 7, 2024, for their XXXVI General Assembly. Delving into the theme ‘The Church’s Response to the Current Socio-Political Situation of the Country and the Benefits and Challenges of AI,’ the assembly meticulously addressed the multifaceted challenges confronting India.

In light of these challenges, the CBCI’s statement emphasised principles of non-violence, healing, justice, and reconciliation. The bishops began by acknowledging India’s rich cultural heritage and its commitment to unity in diversity.

The conference, held under the theme ‘The Church’s Response to the Current Socio-Political Situation of the Country and the Benefits and Challenges of AI,” delved into the complex fabric of India’s societal issues and the implications of technological advancements.

Other key concerns highlighted the economic disparities leading to increased unemployment and mass migrations, especially in rural areas. The statement took note of the environmental degradation, particularly affecting tribal communities and coastal regions. The rising instances of religious polarisation and attacks on minority communities, including Christians, were highlighted, along with the erosion of democratic institutions and media integrity.

CBCI highlighted the perilous implications of religious polarisation, labelling it as a direct threat to social harmony and the very essence of democracy. Emphasising principles of non-violence, healing, justice, and reconciliation, the bishops advocated a multi-pronged approach to tackle these pressing issues. The proposed strategies encompassed prayer, renewed commitment to serve marginalised communities, advocacy for constitutional values, and environmental stewardship.

Navigating the Era of Artificial Intelligence

In grappling with the implications of AI, the bishops recognised both its potential benefits and inherent risks. While acknowledging its potential to revolutionize various sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, and education, the CBCI cautioned against the misuse of AI technologies. Urging responsible engagement, the bishops echoed Pope Francis’s call to embrace the digital world conscientiously.

Recognizing AI as both a blessing and a challenge, the bishops explored its potential benefits in various sectors while cautioning against its misuse. They underscored Pope Francis’s call to embrace the digital world responsibly.

The CBCI called for regulation of AI development and usage to prevent abuses and protect privacy. It also called for educational and awareness programs to promote responsible digital citizenship and safeguard against manipulation. Utilisation of AI tools for effective faith formation and community engagement was also emphasised.

Paradoxically, despite discussions regarding AI, it has come to light that certain links on the CBCI’s website were directing users to gaming and adult content. This issue was raised during a press conference earlier this year, where concerns were brought to the attention of the CBCI leadership. Strikingly, a similar issue had been flagged to them a couple of years ago as well. Nothing seems to have changed on the ground.

Calling for action, the CBCI reaffirmed its commitment to integral human development and pledged continued service to the nation. They invoked the spirit of hope and solidarity, urging all citizens to work together for the welfare and prosperity of India.

As the country approaches the Jubilee Year 2025, the Church stands as a beacon of hope, echoing the words of Jesus to proclaim liberty and justice for all.

The CBCI’s final statement served as a clarion call for collective action and underscores the urgent need for holistic solutions to address India’s pressing challenges in the 21st century.

  1. While polarisation is going on religious lines, the Catholic Church can also examine how she is also propagating polarisation in the same lines when a candidate/ religious/priest in diocese or religious society faces the same sectorian attitude when going to other diocese or religious society either by own’s choice or finding unsuitable Superior or work atmosphere to continue further.

  2. OM Prakash Arya is dead right. The Catholic Church is also guilty of polarisation and/or sidelining those priests who are upright and outspoken. True `prophetic voices’ are stifled in the Catholic Church.
