Call to Discipleship

Readings: 1 Sam 24: 3-21; Mk 3: 13-19

The readings of the day invite us to contemplate the theme, “Our call comes from God.” Examining the world today, we observe how individuals exploit one another for power and position. However, this was not the case with David. In Israel, kingship was bestowed by God, signifying Saul as the Lord’s chosen one.

Therefore, out of loyalty and generosity, David spared the life of King Saul, who had intended to kill him. The gospel of the day gives us the understanding that our vocation originates from God. While we may perceive it as our free choice to follow Christ, the truth is that the Lord takes the first initiative in making us his disciples.

As seen in the gospel, Jesus called to him those whom he desired, understanding the needs of the people. People require healing of their inner spirit and appreciation of their self- worth.

Thus, Jesus calls his twelve apostles to serve as instruments of healing, imparting a sense of self-worth to people and emphasizing their value, surpassing even ‘the sparrows in the air.’ His call extends to everyone, urging all to be partners in his mission, bringing purpose to those who have lost it. Therefore, we pray that the Lord may help us to hear his calling and help us to respond generously to him with deep trust saying “Here Am I, Lord. Send me.”
