Be Useful to People Around

Readings: Heb 5: 1-10; Mk 2:18-22

The first reading speaks of the ‘chosen one’, ‘obedience’, ‘weakness’, ‘submission’. The gospel is about ‘law’ and ‘finding meaning in our actions’. Through these messages, Jesus is inviting me to be more practical. The society is changing, the demands and needs of people go through changes, world is developing, and the situation has taken a drastic change during the COVID-19 situation.

Liturgical celebrations have become simpler, luxury and posh celebrations have given way for minimalist ones. Amidst these situations, what can be noticed is that people are ready to accept the situation. We need to adapt to the situation and be practical instead of becoming more rigid with laws and meaningless celebrations. Through his life, Jesus showed the people that he is the messiah whom they awaited. Failing to recognize him led them to grumble and complain. I am invited to identify and recognize the needs of those whom I am living with, and to respond to them. For that I need ‘grace’ from the Lord.

Perfect submission, obedience to the promptings of the spirit etc. will help me to be practical and take decisions according to the needs of the time. I am weak and have limitations as a human being. But if I spend time in prayer and listen to the Lord through obedience, acceptance, and willingness, I can be strong and be more effective and useful to the people around.
