Today, the church celebrates the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion to the Sacred Heart began in 12th Century. Later, in the year 1856, Pope Pius IX established the feast of the Sacred Heart as obligatory for the whole Church.

It is for no other reason but love that Yahweh kept the oath which he swore to the ancestors of Israel. God has been faithful throughout the history of salvation, more loving, true to his covenant and his love lasted a thousand generations. We hear this in the first reading. In the second reading also St. John speaks of God’s love for us through his son Jesus Christ. God is love. Jesus is the outpouring of God’s love for us and the greatest gift God could give for the humanity.

If God, with all his might and power can act with much love for all, how can we, his creatures act without love? Jesus himself says in today’s gospel that he is gentle and humble in heart. He invites each one to act with love. Every problem begins when we forget that we have a heart and stop listening to it. When we are confused, or frustrated or burdened with negativities around us, it is our task to stop and see within and listen to the heart and follow it. It is not enough that we utter sugar-coated words but must make sure that we are in constant touch with the heart and speak and act from the heart having the consciousness of God who is kind and merciful at times and circumstances.

Jesus meek and humble of heart, make my heart unto thine!.
