Bengaluru: In the light of the Supreme Court’s verdict today in the Ayodhya temple-mosque dispute, Bengaluru Archbishop Most Rev (Dr) Peter Machado has appealed for peace and harmony for the country at a peace event organised by Indian Catholic Matters.
In a message, Bishop Peter said, “Peace and harmony are important traits of every religion. We, Christians, are known to be votaries of peace. Jesus came into the world as a Messiah of Peace with the message “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”’ (Jn 14, 27)
“As the verdict on the Ayodhya issue is being pronounced today by the Supreme Court of our country, we pray that the people of all communities may accept it with a spirit of understanding,” the Bishop pleaded.
The Supreme Court verdict hopefully will put to rest a religious and political flashpoint that has cast a shadow on the country for decades. A five-judge constitution bench will deliver its decision at 10.30 am amid appeals for peace and heightened security across the country. The verdict comes after a century-old legal wrangle over a piece of land in Ayodhya where the 16th century Babri mosque stood before it was razed by Hindu activists who believe it is the birthplace of Lord Ram.
Bishop exhorted the people to dwell the spirit of humanity and peace. “The Apostle of Jesus, St Paul exhorts us, “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. …and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Phil 4, 7).”
“Let us Christians all over the country continue to be messengers of peace and harmony to the members of all the communities. I request that Sunday, 10th November be declared as day of prayer and penance in all the Churches and institutions of the Archdiocese of Bangalore for peace and harmony in the country,” he added.
