Assam: Novel Seminar in Golaghat Gets Youth Closer to Church

Golaghat (Assam): On 7 and 8 July 2023, a seminar on the theme “Know Your Church” was conducted at St. Teresa’s Parish, Golaghat for the youth of the parish. A total of 340 youths participated from 34 catholic communities of the parish. Sessions were taken by Fr. Blasius Tete sdb. The objective of the seminar was to educate and inform participants about various aspects of their church, its history, mission, structure, and activities. The seminar aimed to deepen the participants’ understanding and foster a sense of belonging and engagement within the church community.

On 7th evening, there was a confession arranged for all the youth. It was followed by the Rosary service and common adoration service.

On 8th July there was solemn mass presided over by Fr. Blasius Tete sdb. During the homily, Fr. Blasius Tete emphasized on respecting and honouring parents and the need to get blessings of parents as Esau and Jacob received from their parents Isaac and Rebecca.

After the breakfast, there was inaugural function. During the inaugural function after lighting the lamp, Fr. Policarp Xalxo sdb, principal of Don Bosco College Golaghat extended a warm welcome to the resource person, fathers, sisters and the participants followed by a message given by Fr. Joseph Kindo, the Parish Priest of Golaghat Parish acknowledging the presence and contribution of every one emphasized the importance of understanding and actively participating in the church community. After this, there was an exhibition conducted by the youth on the theme, “Known Your Church.” After the exhibition, there were sessions conducted on the above theme.

The seminar was structured into several sessions, covering different topics related to the church. The agenda included

History and Foundation
This session focused on tracing the historical roots of the church, highlighting key milestones, significant events, and notable personalities who contributed to its establishment and growth. The participants gained insights into the rich heritage of their church and its impact on the local community.

Elements of Catholic Spirituality
In this short, session the participants gained the knowledge of a wide range of beliefs, practices, and values that are central to the Catholic faith such us; prayers, Holy Mass, Sacraments, Scripture and tradition, devotion to Mary and the Saints, Social Service and Justice, Spiritual Direction and formation, Lectio Divina, Retreat, pilgrimages and Shrines, praying for the deceased, works of mercy, novena, station of the cross, Liturgical sessions, divine mercy etc.

Men and Women Religious Groups and their Charisms
During this session, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the diverse charisms and missions of men and women religious groups. They learned how these groups address the needs of society through their specific areas of focus, such as education, healthcare, social services, and spiritual guidance.

On 8th evening the parish youth put up cultural items on the stage highlighting the tremendous talents and diversity present among the young individuals. The event provided a platform for cultural exchange, artistic expression, and community bonding. The impact it had on fostering intercultural understanding and appreciation was evident, and it left a lasting impression on both the participants and the audience. The Cultural Night stands as a testament to the power of youth-led initiatives in promoting cultural harmony and unity within our community.

In between the items, Mr. Amos Ekka spoke on “Haath ker Vidya” on behalf of DB Tech to the Youth of Golaghat Parish stressing on Graphic designing (for class 12 and above), electricians (for Class 8 and above) mushroom cultivation, small poultry etc. the projects which are being implemented in Golaghat Parish for 18-30 years old youths. After him, Fr. Blasius Tete spoke on “Safe Migration.” He stressed on the challenges and potential solutions related to migration. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the risks associated with unsafe migration practices and the importance of safe migration for individuals, families, and communities.

The seminar on “Know Your Church” was a resounding success in achieving its objectives of educating, engaging, and empowering participants. By providing insights into the history, structure, mission, and activities of the church, the seminar enabled attendees to develop a stronger connection with their faith community. The knowledge gained from the seminar will undoubtedly contribute to a more enriched and fulfilling church experience for all participants.
