Readings: 1Thes 1:1-5,8-10; Mt 23:13-22

Today’s readings offer a profound reflection on the nature of true faith, the impact of genuine discipleship, and the dangers of religious hypocrisy. In the first reading, St Paul appreciates the believers in Thessalonica for their exemplary faith, love, and endurance amidst persecution. He praises their response to the gospel, becoming imitators of Christ and an inspiration to others

The Gospel records Jesus’ criticism of the scribes and Pharisees for their religious hypocrisy and failure to live out the teachings they espoused. He rebukes them for their self-righteousness and their neglect of justice, mercy, and faithfulness.

The readings challenge us to ensure that our actions align with the principles of justice, mercy, and faithfulness. They invite us to be firm in the times of persecution and violence, like the Christians in Manipur, who are strong in their faith during these times of suffering. As believers, we have the responsibility for speaking out against violence and working toward justice and reconciliation. We can draw inspiration from the Thessalonian believers, who embodied their faith in their actions.
