A True Shepherd: Konkani Catholics Honour Archbishop Bernard Moras

Verghese V Joseph –

Bengaluru: In a ceremony marked by heartfelt tributes and faith-filled memories, the Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA) presented Archbishop Emeritus Bernard Blasius Moras with a Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunday at St. Joseph’s University auditorium. The honour recognised a pastoral career defined less by rank than by an enduring commitment to people, health care and community-building across Karnataka and beyond.

“More than titles, his legacy is measured in lives changed and hope renewed,” noted one speaker, reflecting a recurring theme of the evening: Moras’s leadership as service.

Born on August 10, 1941, in Kuppepadav, a small village in Dakshina Kannada, Moras grew up in a devout household where long walks to Mass were part of family life. Those early experiences, along with mentorship from the late Rev. Fr. John G. Pinto—who spearheaded church construction in Kuppepadav—shaped his vocation and anchored him in grassroots ministry.

Ordained in 1967, Moras’s early assignments revealed an aptitude for administration coupled with pastoral sensitivity. Colleagues point to his stewardship in health care institutions as a defining strand of his ministry. At Fr. Muller’s Hospital in Mangalore and later at St. John’s Medical College Hospital in Bengaluru, he promoted a model of care that fused medical professionalism with Christian service, expanding facilities and launching programs aimed at improving access and dignity for patients.

“Moras saw hospitals as places of healing and human encounter, not merely facilities,” said a longtime associate. “That perspective guided expansion and outreach under his leadership.”

His episcopal ministry began in Belgaum in 1997, where he quickly became known for accessibility and extensive pastoral travel. Parishioners recall a bishop who kept personal contact with remote missions, schools and convents, encouraging lay participation and strengthening social service initiatives. His time in Belgaum left behind more than projects; it forged personal relationships that parishioners still cherish.

In 2004 Moras was appointed Archbishop of Bengaluru, a post that widened his platform for pastoral renewal and interfaith engagement. Facing the challenges of a rapidly changing city and Church, he emphasised dialogue, collaborative leadership and pastoral planning. One notable initiative was the Karnataka Regional Pastoral Plan, an effort aimed at building a more participatory Church long before the term “synodality” entered wider ecclesial conversations.

Clergy and lay leaders credit Moras with fostering structures that invited greater involvement from the faithful. “He believed a local Church should be a shared mission,” an archdiocesan official said. “That conviction translated into concrete programs that encouraged ownership at the parish level.”

Despite rising to prominent roles, Archbishop Moras retained a reputation for simplicity and warmth. Priests, religious and laypeople describe him as approachable, quick with a smile and attentive to individual concerns. These personal qualities, combined with a public voice for justice and communal harmony, helped him reach beyond Catholic circles to advocate for marginalized groups and to support interreligious cooperation.

The FKCA award ceremony also served as a moment for the Konkani Catholic community to celebrate one of its most visible sons. Even as Moras carried responsibilities that extended across Karnataka and India, he remained connected to his Konkani roots—supporting cultural traditions, encouraging vocations and urging younger generations to use their talents in service of society.

The evening included recognition for several other notable figures. Dr. Oscar G. Concessao, co-founder and principal architect of Oscar, Ponni, Rahul Architects, Chennai, received the Professional Excellence award. Mr. Keith Machado, managing director of Orione Hydraulics Pvt Ltd, Belagavi, was named Entrepreneur of the Year. Chevalier Nigel Fernandes, CEO of ATC Publishers and a Papal Knight of the Order of St. Sylvester, received a Special Community Service Recognition.

The programme was presided over by Udupi Diocese Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Leslie Clifford D’Souza. Dignitaries and community leaders from across the region attended, offering reflections that traced Moras’s journey from village seminarian to metropolitan archbishop.

As the evening concluded, speeches and applause gave way to a quieter acknowledgement of what those gathered called an abiding legacy: a ministry that modelled pastoral closeness and an insistence that leadership is fulfilled through service. Archbishop Emeritus Moras, now in his eighties, accepted the FKCA honour with characteristic modesty, acknowledging those who worked alongside him and pointing attention back to the communities he has long served.

For many in the Konkani Catholic diaspora and in the dioceses he led, the award was a timely reminder that influence is most durable when it is rooted in compassion, humility and sustained engagement with ordinary lives. The footprints Archbishop Moras leaves are visible in institutions he helped shape—and in the quieter testimony of people whose lives he touched.
