Odisha: St. Vincent de Paul Society Distributes Blankets to Needy in Kandhamal

Raikia, Kandhamal: As winter approaches each year, harsh temperatures pose severe challenges for people living on the margins of society those without proper shelter, warm clothing, or access to basic necessities. Recognizing this urgent need, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) continues its mission of compassion by organizing blanket distribution drives to support the most vulnerable communities of Kandhamal in the eastern India state of Odisha.

With the initiative by Bhubaneswar Central Council of St. Vincent’s de Paul Society distributed blankets to the hundreds of needy people both students, young and old of Kandhamal to fight the biting cold during winter season.

SSVP, guided by the principles of faith, charity, and service, has long been committed to uplifting individuals and families facing hardship. The winter blanket distribution initiative is one of its most impactful seasonal outreach activities, reflecting the society’s dedication to preserving dignity and offering practical assistance to those in need.

S. John the president of Bhubaneswar Central Council and Raju Digal the vice president from SSVP identify marginalized groups including the homeless, daily-wage earners, migrant workers, elderly individuals living alone, and families residing in temporary shelters. Through coordinated field visits and community networks, they ensure that help reaches those who are often overlooked.

“The success of the blanket drives is largely made possible by the generosity of some donors, and local well-wishers. Contributions whether monetary or in-kind enable SSVP to procure good quality blankets that offer real warmth and comfort, “says S. John the president of Bhubaneswar Central council.

“A heartfelt thank you to the Vincentians for your selfless work. By giving these blankets, you are not only providing physical warmth but also hope and comfort to many,” acknowledges Jines Sabhasundar  one of the recipients.

“The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s blanket drive is making a significant difference. We extend our sincere gratitude to all the members and volunteers. The blankets you provide are a true blessings, especially during the cold weather.

 “While a blanket may seem like a small gift, for someone facing the winter cold without adequate protection, it can be life-changing. This initiative not only safeguards physical well-being but also restores hope. For the recipients, it is a reminder that they are seen, valued, and cared for,” expresses Father Pradosh Chandra Nayak, the vicar general of archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and spiritual advisor of SSVP in Kandhamal.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP), founded in 1833 in Parish by Blessed Frederic Ozanam and companions.  He was inspired by the charitable works of St. Vincent de Paul, the founder  of the Congregation of the Mission (CM) and St. Louise de Marillac, the co-founder of  the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, a community of women dedicated to serving the poor.  Her spirituality emphasized “serving Christ in persons who are poor.”

The Mission of the society is to serve the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy through person-to- person service.

Odisha’s Cuttack-Bhubaneswar archdiocese has 78 conferences, Kandhamal has 68 conferences and 8 Area councils of Bhubaneswar Central council.
