Jharkhand: A Living Testament of Faith – Khunti Diocese Hosts 5,000 Devoted Mothers

Gaurebera, Jharkhand: About 5,000 Catholic mothers gathered in a remarkable display of faith at the 27th Convention of the Khunti Diocese Catholic Mahila Sangh, held at the St. Assisi Church in Gaurbera, Jharkhand in the in the northeastern part of India. This two-day event, hosted by the TOR Franciscan Fathers under the leadership of parish priest Fr. Mathew, showcased the vibrant spirit of a Synodal Church in action.

The convention took place in Gaurbera, located approximately 17 kilometers east of Khunti district, which is home to a rich diversity of parishes and mission stations. The Khunti Diocese encompasses four vicariates and serves a diverse community -– Khunti (06 Parishes), Karra (06 Parishes), Torpa (06 Parishes) and Sarwada (5 Parishes) — from Khunti diocese with 21 Parishes and 2 mission stations – Dolda and Saranloya. Besides, there were 106 priests and numerous religious members dedicated to spiritual growth and community service. Khunti belongs to the Munda Belt.

The roots of the Chotanagpur mission trace back to Fr. Augustus Stockman S.J., who laid its foundation in 1869. He purchased the first land for the mission where Divya Bharati is today. But sadly, on April 23, 1897, he died in Khunti. His legacy continues to inspire as we reflect on significant milestones, such as the first baptism in Chotanagpur on November 8, 1873, which marked the beginning of a profound faith journey for many.

During this year’s convention, the atmosphere was charged with devotion as mothers participated in confessions led by 26 priests for two hours, demonstrating their deep commitment to spiritual renewal. The following day began with morning prayers and a Holy Eucharist celebrated by Fr. Bisu Benjamin Aind, surrounded by fellow clergy and sisters who joined in this sacred celebration.

Sr. Lalita Roshni Lakra DSA, the main speaker, while delivering a talk on the topic – ‘Role of mothers in making a Synodal Church,’ emphasized the pivotal role of mothers in nurturing a Synodal Church, urging attendees to cherish their tribal culture and customs as vital aspects of their identity. Drawing inspiration from biblical figures like St. Joseph and Mother Mary, she encouraged families to cultivate a prayerful environment. “We need to long for God and constantly spend time in prayer as Simeon and Anna did in their lives. We are all pilgrims of hope and need to think positive always whatever may be our life situations,” she added.

The sight of mothers with their children resting under mango trees highlighted their simplicity and dedication. Despite limited resources, they arrived early for the convention, showcasing their unwavering love for the Church and commitment to personal growth.

Action plans presented by Rev. Fr. Amrit Lakra, S.J. focused on enhancing prayer life within families and communities, encouraging daily reflection on scripture, and active participation in church meetings to foster unity and collaboration.

Adopting the encyclical of Pope Francis – ‘Laudato Si.’ The Catholic Sabha (fathers of the Parish and Youth gave a helping hand in cooking) served the meal by using the leaf plates for mothers.

The Vicar General Fr. Bisu Benjamin Aind announced the 152nd Anniversary of the arrival of Fr.
