Honouring Cardinal Gracias’ Legacy, Archbishop Rodrigues Takes the Helm of the Archdiocese of Bombay

Verghese V Joseph –

Archbishop John Rodrigues formally took over as the Archbishop of Bombay on January 25, 2025, marking a significant transition for the Archdiocese following the acceptance of Cardinal Oswald Gracias’ resignation by Pope Francis. This change in leadership comes after Cardinal Gracias served for nearly two decades, leaving behind a legacy characterized by profound contributions to both the local and universal Church.

The appointment of Archbishop Rodrigues was announced by Pope Francis, who accepted Cardinal Gracias’ resignation after it had been pending for five years. Cardinal Gracias, who turned 80 on December 24, 2024, had submitted his resignation upon reaching the customary retirement age for bishops. His tenure began in October 2006 when he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. During his time as Archbishop, he played a pivotal role in various global and local initiatives, including participating in the conclave that elected Pope Francis in 2013.

Archbishop Rodrigues was previously appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of Bombay on November 30, 2024, and was officially installed just days before assuming his new role. His leadership is expected to build upon the foundation laid by Cardinal Gracias, who was widely respected for his dedication and service to the Church and community.

Born on August 21, 1967, in Bandra, Mumbai, Archbishop Rodrigues has dedicated his life to ecclesiastical service. He was ordained a priest on April 18, 1998, and pursued advanced theological studies at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, earning a licentiate in systematic theology. His career has included significant roles such as Rector of St. Pius X College and Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay.

In his inaugural address as Archbishop, Rodrigues expressed gratitude for the support he has received from both clergy and laity: “I am grateful for the kind wishes received and the assurance of prayers on my appointment as Archbishop… We are proud of Cardinal Oswald!”.

His commitment to fostering unity within the Church and engaging with societal issues reflects a pastoral approach that resonates with contemporary challenges facing the Catholic community in India.

In his first statements as Archbishop, Rodrigues paid tribute to Cardinal Gracias’ remarkable contributions. He acknowledged the challenges ahead while expressing respect for his predecessor’s impactful leadership: “Cardinal Oswald Gracias was a giant of a man, and now as his successor I have mighty big shoes to fill.”

Rodrigues emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Church and public authorities to promote unity and development within society. His vision aligns with ongoing efforts to address social inequality and religious pluralism—issues that are increasingly relevant in today’s India.

As Archbishop Rodrigues steps into this pivotal role, he faces both challenges and opportunities. The Catholic Church in India is navigating complex societal dynamics marked by secularism and diverse religious beliefs. Under his guidance, there is hope that the Archdiocese will continue to be a beacon of hope and service amidst these challenges.

Rodrigues’ emphasis on community engagement is expected to play a crucial role in revitalizing parish life and attracting younger generations to participate actively in their faith. His leadership style will likely focus on enhancing existing programs while exploring new initiatives that resonate with contemporary issues faced by parishioners.

To formally welcome Archbishop John Rodrigues into his new role, a special Eucharistic celebration is scheduled for February 11, 2025—the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. This event will serve as an opportunity for priests, religious members, and lay representatives from across the Archdiocese to unite in prayerful support for their new leader. It symbolizes not only a moment of transition but also an affirmation of community solidarity as they embark on this new chapter together.

The transition from Cardinal Oswald Gracias to Archbishop John Rodrigues represents not just a change in leadership but also a continuation of a legacy rooted in service and spiritual guidance. As both clergy and laity rally around their new archbishop, there is optimism about fostering growth within one of India’s most dynamic archdioceses. With gratitude towards God and appreciation for his predecessor’s contributions, Archbishop Rodrigues is poised to lead the Archdiocese of Bombay into a future marked by collaboration, inclusivity, and active engagement with pressing societal issues.
