The readings of the reminds us that we are invited to be the recipients of divine mercy through our faith in the risen Lord. In the first reading, we hear that God’s mercy has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This birth is an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. However, there are times when we face various trials which, in fact, help us discern the genuineness of our faith in God.
Thus, the trials and challenges in our lives invite us to trust in the love of God, who can do all things that are impossible for us. In the Gospel reading, we hear how the rich young man goes away sad when Jesus asks him to sell all his possessions and follow him. It is clear that we can’t serve both God and money at the same time. If we want to be part of God’s kingdom, we need to let go of our material possessions and pride.
Let us reflect on how the attitude of the rich young man is at work within us. And let us ask ourselves: Am I willing to part with the things and people I cherish and value so much? Am I open to the Lord’s invitation to the extent that I am willing to give up everything to follow Christ? So, let us ask the Lord to help us feel his love, enabling us to respond diligently to his abounding love through our words and deeds.
